Surveillance technology includes any kind of technology that is able to monitor the environment and behaviors of people for means such as protection and maintaining social control in terms of the government. When you think of surveillance, the technology that comes to mind are cameras. Cameras are a main part of surveillance technology but keep in mind that it can be anything that is an electronic equipment. The many types of surveillance includes computer, phone, surveillance cameras, etc.

  1. You’ve chosen such an interesting topic! You're definitely correct about surveillance being so much more than just cameras. For instance, our advancing technology has made it possible to have extremely small cameras that we can place around the house to keep watch of our homes. Also, as time goes by, our technology has advanced and so do the types of surveillance objects that include radar guns (used by law enforcement officers to check whether or not we’re speeding from a distance), listening devices, etc. For example, in one of my other sociology classes, we talked about how the government tapped our phones after 9/11 in order to listen for potential leads or terrorist activities. It seems, more and more, we are being monitored on what we do despite the fact that there isn’t an actual human watching us. In a way, it does seem like our computers, phones, the cameras on light posts, are all screened by the same corporation huh?
